In 1884, football teams from Lehigh University and Lafayette College met in Easton, PA for the very first time. It was the beginning of a Rivalry that would become the most-played college football series in history. It was forged through competition, campus proximity, the railroad, and influential personalities. Read how the history of the Lehigh Valley and the development of football helped shape this Rivalry.

This book is a very good history of the Rivalry between Lafayette and Lehigh football. Prior to the rise of football, you get an excellent history of the settlement of eastern Pennsylvania, business development in the area, and the founding of many schools.

It was interesting to read of the early football clubs: how they found other teams to play, developing new plays, and getting funding and recognition while academics was a competing path.

As a Lehigh grad, this brought many of the campus building names to life for me: Packer, Grace, Drown, and Drinker. I also enjoyed to hear how Lafayette did so well in the early football years, trouncing Lehigh, and becoming Pennsylvania and national champions.

It was sad to have the story end in between the world wars, right as the teams were becoming more prominent, and the crowds were getting huge. I hope there is a follow-on edition to take the history past WWII into the present day.

The Rivalry How Two Schools Started the Most Played College Football Series eBook Chuck Burton Kim DePaul Reviews

I cannot wait for my dad to open this for Christmas. I know that he will love the book. My dad is a minister and refuses to comment on politics or sports from the pulpit... except the Lafayette/Lehigh game. He always makes an exception for this rivalry.
A must read for fans of Lehigh or Lafayette to find out the early history of not only the football series but the 2 colleges and the cities they are in. I thought I knew a great deal about the series having followed it for 50 years but the author found a number of interesting items that I knew nothing about. I was especially intrigued by the 18th Century events that formed the 2 cities (Easton and Bethlehem) and the rivalry between the towns at first.

Not too long so I was able to read it before attending the 150th game on November 22, 2014.
