The place Montana. The time the present. After a nearly fatal encounter with a moose and a terrifyingly close brush with middle age, Molly reassesses her life. The result she ends her stale marriage and moves to a former mining camp where, for the price of a used car, she buys The Bluebird House, the site of an old bordello. She hires Ben--a carpenter, poet, gourmet cook and mountain man--to help her renovate the building. Molly can't help but be attracted to the younger man, until she discovers that he was once tried and acquitted of a gruesome murder. Shocked, she tries to uncover the truth behind the murder and Ben's part in it. Meanwhile, intrigued by her new surroundings, Molly finds the journal of her predecessor--the German-born madam of The Bluebird House--and learns her story.

"Rae Ellen Lee is an artist, painting the scenery of her story with poignant brush strokes. She writes about life with wit and humor. For every woman who has ever felt frustrated and alone--and haven't we all?--and for every man who doesn't understand women--and do any of them?--I highly recommend this book." --Marthayn Pelegrimas, Author of On the Strength of Wings.

A near fatal run-in with a moose serves as a catalyst for 51 year old Molly Binfet to evaluate her life and make some changes. She ends her 25+ year marriage and buys a piece of property in an old mining town in Montana. She enlists the help of a local carpenter to rehab the dilapidated brothel that she plans to turn into her new home. Molly finds a diary written by the Madame who ran the brothel a century ago, and becomes intrigued by the woman's story. Meanwhile, in THIS century, Molly has to face the ramifications of her mid-life makeover.

I don't know how autobiographical this story actually is, but the first person narrative gives it the feel of a memoir. I enjoyed Molly's wry sense of humor and her no-nonsense approach to life. The author has a knack for describing people and situations; I could easily visualize the characters and the scenes. And while I can't picture myself making many of the decisions that Molly did, there is something universally relatable in a character who, at mid-life, takes stock of things and decides it's time for a change.

I enjoyed this; the writing was smooth and infused with humor and warmth. It's a slow moving story - no edge-of-your-seat excitement, though there is a bit of a mystery that unfolds. There's a slight "woo-woo", ghostly aspect that can be easily glossed over if that kind of thing doesn't appeal to you.

Fun line: "I find it curious how pets can take the place of one's significant other, especially when he proves to be other than significant." (Ain't that the truth!!)

Little (if any) strong language and no explicit sexual content.

The Bluebird House edition by Rae Ellen Lee Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A poignant story of a woman finding herself through a charging moose - how many city folk can make that claim!

A wonderful love story about a magnificent landscape, human characters of a singular dimension and a story of one person finding herself through history, through pathos and, most especially through love. Not the kind that jumps up and bites you, but the quiet, self assured love of one who finds themselves through others and through herself.

If you don't laugh, don't cry and don't cheer, do not pass go and do not collect $100, and, shame on you!
My initial thoughts after finishing this book were that I wish it would have been longer. I can definitely relate to Molly and have often wondered what it would be like to do exactly as she did. Set out on her own after living her life for others.

The descriptions were amazing. I literally felt as though I were right there with her and the rest of the goofy bunch that made up the town. The author did a terrific job of working the madam into the story and it was so typical small town when the truth came out as to who her child was.

The romance with Ben seemed so normal and I loved how Molly's dog and cat were such a big part of the story.
I loved this book. I did not want it to end.
This author made the story so captivating with a ghost story, an old bordello, a mystery or two, a journey of self discovery... and laughter. The characters who inhabit the fringes of the town are dear to my heart;those who want nothing more than to be free and happy, without the trappings of society.
Having lived in gold mining camps for some years, I recognized these folks who became Molly's new life.
Thank you Rae Ellen Lee for this wonderfully real and fun, touching book.
More, please....
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I first read the book description but it sounded interesting enough... so click... and I was sure glad I decided to get this one. What a refreshing change. It had almost everything to make a good story. Almost being that it didn't have the steamy sex scenes which wouldn't have fit into this story anyway. I really love stories of women who rediscover themselves at an age when they're suppose to be comfortably happy and content with being the happy housewife and granted ,, there are many who are.,, but this was one who wasn't. And instead of staying in a life of unhappiness, she chose to change it. The scenes were vivid and the interactions between the characters was totally believable. Made me feel like I was sitting at the bar with them all. The twists of the story were great. I have already recommended this to some of my friends. Hope they get it and enjoy it as much as I did.
